The Club provides antenatal classes specifically tailored for families expecting twins, triplets or more! The classes are held every two to three months and are approximately five hours in duration.
The classes are designed to be supplemental to a full antenatal course (usually a 6-8 week course) and focus on the aspects of pregnancy, labour, birth and breastfeeding that are specific to multiple births.
There is a slightly medicalised focus to the classes to ensure families are aware of the types of interventions that are more likely with a multiple birth, however the childbirth educator is quite happy to discuss natural birthing options with couples outside of class time, on a one-to-one basis, if required.
The main topics covered in the classes are:
- What to expect
- How to get the best out of the relationship
- Postnatal care
- What happens at antenatal visits and why
- Nutrition and a healthy weight gain
- Babies’ movements
- Warning signs of pre-eclampsia
- Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)
- Signs of labour
- Positions of babies
- Pain relief options
- What to expect – vaginal birth
- What to expect – caesarean birth
- Premature birth and the Neonatal Unit
- What to expect
- Hospital stay
- Postnatal depression
- Supply and demand system
- Importance of diet
- Tandem feeding positions
- Who to ask for help
- Common challenges and ways to manage them
Life with Multiples
- Handy tips for the first year with your new babies
A Childbirth Educator takes the classes, and they can answer medical questions that our members may have. We will also send you an email with information for most of the topics covered.
Many of the books from the Club’s library are available at the classes, to enable members to browse the contents of the library and take any books home with them on loan.
Aside from their educational benefit, the classes are an excellent opportunity for members to meet other expectant parents. Husbands/partners/whanau/support people are encouraged to attend whenever possible – having multiples is definitely a family affair!
Following the birth of your babies, the Club will arrange for your class to get together for a morning tea, and we will also help you to set up a regular coffee group as a means of support for each other.
To ensure that we continue to meet our member’s needs, we regularly review the material we provide during our classes, and we invite (and encourage) feedback from class participants.
The antenatal class is free for Wellington Multiples members. They are offered every three months. For more information email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
